Respite supports you and your carer/s by giving carers short breaks from their caring responsibilities and providing you with time away from your family.
It also gives primary carers the opportunity to rest, recharge, and continue in their caring role with informed and sustainable support.
Who can access short term respite?
This care service can assist families and caregivers by providing flexible supports that are designed to improve family relationships whilst the family maintains responsibility for decisions in the young person's life in partnership with the service provider.
Short term respite may be available for:
- participants who live with their primary informal supports, or who receive daily drop in support from them
- participants who receive more than 6 hours a day of disability related support from their primary informal supports.
The support and assistance under this model may include:
- regular family support
- overnight support, transport
- community activities
- school hours care
- school holiday support.
Who is short term respite not for?
Short term respite is generally not funded for participants who:
- do not live with family or informal supports, or
- already have substantial paid supports, such as:
- Supported Independent Living (SIL)
- Individualised Living Options (ILO)
Respite does not need to be specifically written into a participant's NDIS plan; however, any respite arrangement must still meet the reasonable and necessary criteria. If respite is included in the participant's plan, it generally needs to follow the staffing ratio listed. In some circumstances, a different ratio may be approved, depending on the participant's support needs and the justification provided.
